Jack at work

Artist and wood sculptor, Jack Wilms was born in Cowra, New South Wales, but spent most of his childhood in Germany. Upon his return to Australia in 1983, he travelled this country extensively seeking to re-establish the bond to the land of his birth.
While travelling, Jack Wilms was taken most by the natural beauty of the Australian rainforests. The breathtaking experience seeing majestic trees, reaching high up to form a canopy between heaven and earth, and the rich life of the understory had a long lasting effect on Jack.

Another great influence came from sculptor and painter Jo Danau who Jack met in Perth. It was then that Jack Wilms realised that working timber with his hands and his mind had become an obsession, a destiny. Soon he settled in north Queensland where he only knew two things: finding seasoned Australian Red Cedar and working with it.

Pieces as diverse as 'Gallipoli', 'Lassiter's Reef' and many more were the outcome of this creative working frenzy and resulted in several exhibitions from Cairns in northern Queensland to Sydney.
Although all pieces of art created by Jack Wilms derive from dead and dried out red cedar timber only, it is without doubt that the finished sculptures each tell a very lively story, indeed. It is the intuition of the artist, his love and deep respect for Australia's native flora and fauna, that radiates through his work. Sometimes a piece of timber from a fallen tree reveals its story spontaneously, and sometimes Jack has to set his challenging mind to it for many hours to reveal its hidden identity.
To create sculptures, which are meaningful to everyone is an objective Jack takes very seriously and his ability and intuition to make timber whisper for our intellectual enjoyment and cultural experience helps to reach this goal.
